An ImageOptim Alternative for WebP and Windows
ImageOptim is a great little lossless optimizer. If you need WebP, resizing or Windows support, you'll need something else.
Quick Answer
- ✓ImageOptim's last release was in October 2023. It's free and still useful, but it's Mac only and its maintainer has declined format conversion.
- ✓FileHop is free on Mac and Windows, and converts, resizes and compresses batches of images, including to WebP.
- ✓Keep ImageOptim for lossless optimization, or if it's part of your build scripts. FileHop isn't built for that.
Why look for an ImageOptim alternative?
ImageOptim shrinks images without visible change and strips hidden metadata, and it has been a Mac favorite for years. Version 1.9.3 came out in October 2023, and while the code repository has seen recent commits, there's been no new release. The maintainer has also said conversions don't suit its interface, so WebP output isn't on the way.
That matters because websites now rely on WebP. If your job has grown from shaving bytes to preparing images for the web, you need resizing and conversion too. ImageOptim also doesn't run on Windows.
How to prepare images with FileHop
FileHop handles images in batches, inside its file browser.
Open your folder
Open FileHop and go to your images. It reads formats from HEIC and AVIF to PSD, EXR and camera RAW.
Select your images
Select up to 1,000 at once.
Convert or compress
Convert to JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or HEIC, or compress and resize.
Strip metadata
Remove location and camera data before you share images.
FileHop reads AVIF but can't write it, and its compression isn't a lossless pipeline like ImageOptim's. There's no command-line tool or Finder service.
Other options
Depending on your workflow, one of these may suit you.
Stay on ImageOptim
If you only want smaller PNGs and JPEGs with no quality change, it still works well, and it's free.
Squoosh
Google's browser-based tool for comparing formats one image at a time. It's good for learning settings, but less so for batches.
Compresto
A paid Mac compressor that also covers video and PDFs, with presets and folder watching.
