Local MCP Servers for File Conversion

An AI agent can write a script to convert a file, or it can call a tool built for the job. Here's how the options compare, and when local beats hosted.

Quick Answer

  • ✓MCP lets agents call tools. A local server runs those tools on your computer. A hosted one sends your files to a service.
  • ✓FileHop is a free local option covering files, PDF, images, video, audio, data and archives in one app.
  • ✓Local isn't fully private. A cloud agent's provider still receives whatever the agent reads.

Why use an MCP server instead of shell commands?

Agents such as Claude Code can already run ffmpeg or ImageMagick, if those are installed and the agent gets the flags right. That works, but it's unpredictable: a raw shell has broad access, and a wrong command can overwrite files. A dedicated tool has typed inputs, so the agent says what it wants, and the tool handles the details.

The bigger choice is where the work happens. Hosted servers such as CloudConvert's are simple to connect and handle many formats, but files go to a service, usually with usage-based pricing. Local servers keep processing on your machine, which suits large files, but many cover just one format or file type.

How to set up FileHop's MCP tools

FileHop serves its tools from the desktop app, so there's nothing else to host.

1

Turn on agent access

Open Settings > Agents and turn on Let AI agents use FileHop. It's off by default.

2

Connect your agent

Use Connect for Claude Code, Codex, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf or Gemini CLI, or copy the config for another client.

3

Share folders

Choose which folders agents can reach, and whether access is read-only or read and write.

4

Ask in plain language

Try: merge these invoices and compress the result. Check the Activity log, where each call has Stop and Undo.

FileHop's limits apply to its own tools. An agent that can also run shell commands can still do anything your account can.

Other options

Different setups suit different work.

Filesystem MCP server

The reference server for reading and writing files in allowed folders. It's a good base, but it doesn't convert or compress anything.

Hosted conversion servers

CloudConvert's MCP server covers many formats with little setup, but files are uploaded and it uses credits. Check that this fits your data.

Single-format servers

Many community servers handle just PDF or just Word. They can go deeper on one format, so check how recently each was updated.

Local vs hosted file tools

General differences. Check each server's documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an MCP server?

It's a program that offers tools to AI agents through the Model Context Protocol.

Which agents work with FileHop?

Claude Code, Codex, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and Gemini CLI have Connect in Settings. Other MCP clients can use the copied config.

Does FileHop include an AI model?

No. You bring your own agent.

Do my files stay on my computer?

FileHop processes them locally, but a cloud agent's provider receives whatever the agent reads.

Can agents delete my files?

With FileHop's tools, delete means moving to the OS Trash. FileHop can't control an agent's own shell commands.

Can agents edit Word or Excel files through FileHop?

Not today. They can extract text, convert and work with data files.

Can I limit which tools agents use?

Yes. Each toolset can be switched on or off.

Which tools are included?

Groups cover files, conversion, PDF, media, data, archives, documents and images.

Give your agent local file tools

Off by default, limited to folders you share, and logged with Undo.
