Office 2021 for Mac Stopped Working? Here's the Fix

If Word or Excel went read-only or says your license isn't supported, it was a Microsoft update bug. You don't need a Microsoft 365 subscription to fix it.

Quick Answer

  • ✓Update to version 16.114.3 or later. Microsoft's release notes say this build fully restores Office 2021.
  • ✓You don't need to buy Microsoft 365. The lockout came from a faulty update, not from your license expiring.
  • ✓If you rolled back or disabled AutoUpdate, you can undo that now. Those workarounds came before the fix.

What happened to Office 2021 for Mac?

Two things happened close together, and they often get mixed up. Support for Office 2021 ended on October 13, 2026, which means no more security fixes, but Microsoft says the apps may keep working. Then version 16.114.1 arrived on October 22, and many users found Word and Excel had gone read-only. Some saw this message: Your Office 2021 license is not supported with this version of the application.

On October 27, Microsoft released 16.114.3. Its release notes say: "A previous update inadvertently disabled Office 2021 for existing users." They add that the update resolves the issue and restores functionality for affected customers. So the lockout was a bug, and end of support didn't cause it. Much of the advice in forums predates this release, so you may see fixes you no longer need.

How to fix it

Save copies of anything important first. Your files aren't damaged, but it's a good habit before changing software.

1

Check your version

Open Word, then choose Word > About Word. If it's 16.114.3 or higher, go to step 3.

2

Update Office

Choose Help > Check for Updates to open Microsoft AutoUpdate, then install the latest version. Update all your Office apps.

3

Restart Office

Quit every Office app, then reopen one. Sign in with the Microsoft account you bought Office with, if asked.

4

Refresh your license if needed

If it's still read-only, users suggest the app menu > About > More Info > Refresh License, though some saw it fail with error 16. If that doesn't work, contact Microsoft, and be aware that support for this version has ended.

These steps come from Microsoft's release notes, its Office update page and user reports. Microsoft hasn't published a detailed guide to this bug that we could find, so menus may differ on your Mac. Microsoft also puts very old builds into reduced functionality mode, which updating resolves too. If AutoUpdate won't offer the update, your version of macOS may be too old.

If you tried a workaround

Before the fix, people rolled back or turned off updates. Here's how to get back to normal.

You rolled back to 16.113 or 16.114

Update to the latest version using Microsoft AutoUpdate. Those older builds work, but the current one has the fix.

You turned off automatic updates

Turn them back on in Microsoft AutoUpdate. If you renamed the AutoUpdate app in Terminal, rename it back. Otherwise you could miss later fixes.

You just need to edit a file today

FileHop opens and edits .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files for free, with no Microsoft account. It's a handy stopgap, not a full Office replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Office 2021 for Mac go read-only?

A Microsoft update disabled Office 2021 for existing users by mistake. Reports began with version 16.114.1.

Which version fixes it?

Version 16.114.3, released October 27, 2026, according to Microsoft's release notes.

Did my license expire?

No. Office 2021 is a one-time purchase, and end of support doesn't turn it into a subscription.

Do I need Microsoft 365 now?

Not to fix this. Whether to move on is a separate question, since Office 2021 no longer gets security fixes.

Should I keep automatic updates off?

We suggest turning them back on. Disabling them was a workaround from before the fix.

It's still read-only after updating. What now?

Fully quit Office, sign in with your purchase account, and try Refresh License. If that fails, contact Microsoft support.

Are my documents safe?

Reports describe the apps refusing to edit, not damaged files. Your documents should still open.

Will this happen again?

No one can say. Office 2021 is out of support, so it's worth having a plan.
