How to Split an Excel Workbook into Separate Files
Excel makes you save sheets one at a time or write a VBA macro. FileHop exports every sheet at once, offline.
Quick Answer
- ✓Excel's Save As exports one sheet at a time. Automating more usually means VBA.
- ✓FileHop exports all sheets at once. Choose CSV, TSV, JSON, Parquet or PDF from Data Tools.
- ✓Nothing is uploaded, so financial and customer data stays on your computer.
Why is splitting a workbook so awkward?
CSV is a single-table format, so one workbook with twelve sheets means twelve files. Excel saves only the active sheet as CSV, and the common workaround is a macro copied from a forum. Many workplaces block macros, and online splitters require uploading your file.
A local export solves this without code. Note that this splits a workbook by sheet. FileHop doesn't currently split one sheet into many files by row count or column value.
How to export every sheet with FileHop
It takes a few clicks on Mac or Windows.
Open the workbook
Open the .xlsx from FileHop's file browser.
Open Data Tools
Choose the format you want: CSV, TSV, JSON, Parquet or PDF.
Choose all sheets
Pick all sheets rather than just the current one.
Export
The files are written to your computer. Your workbook stays as it was.
CSV holds values only. Formatting, charts and multiple sheets don't exist in the format, so keep your workbook as the master copy.
Other ways to split a workbook
Depending on what you need, one of these may suit you better.
Save As in Excel
Fine for one or two sheets. Repetitive beyond that.
VBA macros
Flexible, and they can split by row or column value, but they require Excel, macro permissions and some care with code from the web.
Python with pandas
Ideal for repeatable pipelines and splitting by column value, if you're comfortable with code.

|---|---|---|
| Needs Excel | Yes | No |
| Needs code | Yes | No |
| Macro permissions | Often blocked | Not needed |
| Split by column value | Yes, with code | No, sheets only |
