Edit Excel Files Without Microsoft Office
Open an .xlsx, change cells and formulas, and save it back as .xlsx. A desktop spreadsheet editor for Mac & Windows that works offline and uploads nothing.
How it works
- 1 Download FileHop Free · 144 MB · Mac & Windows
- 2 Open the folder with your files It opens like Finder or File Explorer.
- 3 Right-click your file Pick the tool you need — it runs instantly, on your device.
Save patches the file and copies everything you didn't touch as it was, so charts, pivot tables and macros stay in the workbook.
Just 144 MB
What You Can Do
Edit cells and formulas
A formula bar, Name Box and Insert Function dialog with about 300 functions across 10 families. Cross-sheet references and named ranges work, and results recalculate as you edit.
Format the way you expect
Fonts, bold and italic, fill and font colors, borders, wrap, alignment, indent, format painter, and number formats for currency, percent and dates.
Work across sheets
Add, rename, duplicate, reorder and delete sheets, set tab colors, freeze panes, merge cells, and insert or delete rows and columns.
Find & Replace properly
Match case, whole cell and wildcards, search in formulas or values, and Replace All. Paste Special handles values only or formatting only.
Fill faster
Drag the fill handle to extend a series or copy a formula. Select a range to see Sum, Average and Count in the status bar.
Keep the workbook's rules
Existing dropdowns, data validation alerts, conditional formatting and table styles are honoured, and locked cells on protected sheets stay locked.
What It Doesn't Do
FileHop is for fixing and updating real files, not for replacing Excel in heavy financial modelling. Here is where the line sits.
- Charts, pivot tables, comments and macros are kept when you save, but they aren't shown or editable in the grid. Macros never run.
- You can use existing dropdowns, conditional formats and tables, but you can't create new rules or tables yet.
- Dynamic array functions such as FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, LET and LAMBDA aren't supported, nor are RAND, XIRR and NETWORKDAYS.
- .xls and .ods files open read-only. Convert them to .xlsx to edit. Sheets over 100,000 rows also open read-only.

Can I edit an Excel file without Microsoft Office?
Yes. FileHop opens .xlsx and .xlsm files in its own spreadsheet grid, so you can edit cells, formulas and formatting and save back to the same file without having Excel installed.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Editing runs entirely on your computer, with no connection needed and no upload.
Will saving damage my workbook?
FileHop saves by patching the file rather than rebuilding it, and untouched parts are copied as they were. Charts, pivot tables, comments and macros stay in the workbook. As with any edit to an important file, keep a copy until you've checked the result.
Can I edit .xls or .ods files?
They open read-only. FileHop can convert them to .xlsx, and the converted copy is fully editable.
Which formulas are supported?
About 300 functions, including IF, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, SUMPRODUCT, OFFSET, IRR, NPV and PMT. Dynamic array functions such as FILTER and UNIQUE aren't supported.
Can I undo my changes?
Yes, while you're editing. Saving clears the undo history, so check your work before you save.
Do macros run in FileHop?
No. An .xlsm file can be edited and its macros are kept in the file, but FileHop never runs them.
How large a spreadsheet can it edit?
Sheets up to 100,000 rows are editable. Larger sheets open read-only, showing the first 100,000 rows, and you can convert them to Parquet to explore the full data.
