Frequently Asked Questions
What is an M2TS (or MTS) file?
M2TS and MTS are the AVCHD format used by camcorders to record high-definition video. The clip is H.264 video in an MPEG-2 transport-stream container — great for cameras, but awkward to play and edit on a computer. Converting to MP4 fixes that.
Is .mts the same as .m2ts?
They're the same AVCHD recording in nearly identical containers. Camcorders write .mts on the SD card, and the same clips appear as .m2ts inside the AVCHD/BDMV folder structure when copied to a computer. FileHop converts both the same way.
Why won't my M2TS file play or import into my editor?
Many players and editors don't fully support the AVCHD transport-stream container, so M2TS files stutter, show no audio, or refuse to import. Converting to MP4 gives you a clean, universally supported file.
Does converting M2TS to MP4 lose quality?
No meaningful loss. The H.264 video inside an M2TS is exactly what MP4 uses, so FileHop copies the video stream directly into MP4 without re-encoding. Only the audio is converted to AAC when needed, so picture quality is identical to the source.
Which camcorders produce M2TS / MTS files?
AVCHD camcorders from Sony, Panasonic, Canon, JVC, and others. If your camera recorded HD video to an SD card or internal drive and you see .mts or .m2ts files, FileHop will convert them.
My camcorder split a long recording into several M2TS files. Can I rejoin them?
Yes. AVCHD splits long recordings into ~2 GB segments. Convert them all to MP4, then use FileHop's video editor to join the parts back into one continuous clip.
Can I batch convert a whole AVCHD folder?
Yes. Drag the STREAM folder or a stack of M2TS/MTS files into FileHop and convert them all to MP4 at once. There is no file limit.
Will the conversion keep the recording date or 60fps frame rate?
Yes. FileHop preserves the original frame rate, including 50/60fps AVCHD footage, and carries over standard metadata so your clips keep their timing and quality.
Is my footage uploaded anywhere during conversion?
No. FileHop converts entirely on your computer — nothing is uploaded. Family and personal footage stays private, and it works with no internet connection.
Will the converted MP4 work in iMovie, Premiere, and on phones?
Yes. MP4 with H.264 is the universal standard, so the converted files import cleanly into iMovie, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and play on every phone, computer, and browser.
