Frequently Asked Questions
What is a VOB file?
VOB (Video Object) is the format DVDs use to store video. The files live in the VIDEO_TS folder of a DVD or DVD rip and contain MPEG-2 video, audio, and sometimes subtitles. Converting to MP4 makes that content play on modern devices that no longer have DVD drives.
Why won't my VOB file play on my computer or phone?
VOB uses the older MPEG-2 DVD container, which most modern players, browsers, and phones don't handle smoothly. Converting to MP4 with H.264 gives you a file that plays everywhere and is far easier to share or edit.
I have several VOB files like VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB. What are those?
DVDs split a single recording into ~1 GB VOB segments (VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2, and so on). Drop them all into FileHop and convert each to MP4, or convert them and join the parts back into one continuous video in the editor.
Does converting VOB to MP4 lose quality?
VOB stores MPEG-2, which MP4 doesn't use, so the video is re-encoded to H.264. With the default 'Keep Original' quality setting the result is visually indistinguishable from the DVD source, while the file is smaller and far more compatible.
Can FileHop convert commercial / store-bought DVDs?
FileHop converts VOB files you already have on disk, including home-recorded and unprotected DVDs. Commercial DVDs are usually CSS copy-protected, and FileHop does not remove that protection — those discs can't be converted directly.
Can I batch convert a whole VIDEO_TS folder?
Yes. Drag the entire VIDEO_TS folder or a stack of VOB files into FileHop and convert them all to MP4 at once. There is no file limit, and GPU acceleration keeps large batches fast.
Will subtitles and multiple audio tracks survive the conversion?
FileHop converts the main video and audio to MP4. DVD menu navigation is dropped (MP4 has no menu concept), and you can pick which audio track to keep when a VOB has more than one.
Where do VOB files come from besides DVDs?
Anywhere DVD-style video is produced: DVD rips and backups, old camcorders that burned to mini-DVDs, set-top DVD recorders, and archived VIDEO_TS folders on hard drives. FileHop converts all of them to MP4.
Is the conversion done online?
No. FileHop converts entirely on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded, which keeps personal home-video footage private and works even with no internet connection.
Can I upload the converted MP4 to YouTube or share it?
Yes. Once your VOB is converted to MP4, the file uploads to YouTube and any social platform, plays on every phone and computer, and imports into any video editor.
